Results of plastic deformation experiments on two quasicrystalline phases of different structure, icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn and decagonal Al-Ni-Co, and of an approximant phase, ksi'-Al-Pd-Mn, are described. They are interpreted an the basis of a model of the deformation process, the cluster friction model, which is discussed in a number of modifications.
