Structure and perpendicular magnetization of Fe/Ni(111) bilayers on W(110)
Journal of Applied Physics 81, (8),pp 4702-4704 (1997)
Scanningtunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction show that highquality fcc Ni(111) films can be prepared on W(110). Thesubsequent coverage of this Ni template by monolayers of Feleads to a Fe/Ni bilayer with striking magnetic properties. TheFe cap layer induces a spin reorientation of the easyaxis of magnetization from in-plane to perpendicular to the film,as checked with the magneto-optic Kerr effect. At higher Fecoverages, an in-plane magnetization of the bilayer is found, whichis proposed to be caused by the fcc to bcctransition in the Fe layer.
